Most off grid homes run on single phase. Three phase earns its place when big motors need it. How a three Quattro stack works and what it adds.
Most off grid homes and farms run happily on a single phase system. Three phase earns its place when the property has machines that only come in three phase, typically big pumps, workshop machinery and large compressors, or when the total load is too big to sit sensibly on one phase. When it is needed, the usual off grid answer is three Victron inverter chargers of the same model, one per phase, working as one system. It is a proven arrangement, and it is more complex and more expensive than a single phase one, so it is worth being sure before you build it.
What three phase actually gives you
A three phase supply carries power on three conductors, each a phase, with the peaks offset so that the total power flow is smooth. That matters most to electric motors. A three phase motor starts and runs more smoothly than a single phase one of the same size, and above a certain size motors are simply made as three phase.
For everything else in a house, lights, power points, the fridge, the television, a single phase is all that is needed, and on a three phase supply those loads are shared out across the three phases.
Loads that push you to three phase
The question is not how much power the property uses in a day; it is what kind of machines it runs.
- Large pumps. Bore pumps, irrigation and transfer pumps above a modest size are commonly three phase.
- Workshop machinery. Bigger lathes, mills, saw benches and dust extraction.
- Large compressors and refrigeration. Big air compressors, and commercial coolroom plant on a farm or winery.
- Very large total loads. A property whose combined demand would need several large single phase inverters may be easier to balance across three phases.
If the property has one small three phase machine, it is often cheaper to change that machine, or to run it from a drive designed to supply a three phase motor from a single phase, than to build a three phase system for it. Read the motor plate before deciding. Our article on powering a shed or workshop off grid covers motor starts, welders and soft starters.
How a three Quattro stack works
Victron's inverter chargers can be configured for three phase. The MultiPlus-II datasheet says three units of the same model can be configured for three phase output, and up to six sets of three can be paralleled, which for six sets of 48/5000 units comes to 75 kW, 90 kVA. The Quattro, which adds a second AC input, is built the same way.
Victron's own manual for parallel and three phase systems sets firm rules:
- Identical units. All units in one system must be the same type and firmware version.
- The same number on each phase. A stack of three has one unit per phase; a stack of six has two per phase.
- Symmetrical wiring. DC and AC cables to each unit on a phase must be the same length, type and cross section.
- One DC bus. Every inverter and every battery connects to a single common DC bus. Separate battery banks for each phase will not work.
- Star, not delta. The system is designed for a star connection with a distributed neutral.
The manual also says plainly that these systems are complex and that Victron does not recommend untrained or inexperienced installers work on them.
Sizes, and what each phase can carry
The Quattro range at 48 volts and 230 volts gives a sense of the building blocks, from Victron's own published figures:
- Quattro 48/5000: 4,000 W continuous, 10,000 W peak
- Quattro 48/8000: 6,400 W continuous, 16,000 W peak
- Quattro 48/10000: 8,000 W continuous, 20,000 W peak
- Quattro 48/15000: 12,000 W continuous, 25,000 W peak
The point to grasp is that each phase can only carry what the units on that phase can carry. Three Quattro 48/10000 units give 24 kW continuous in total, but 8 kW on any one phase. A big single phase load, an oven, a large heat pump, an EV charger, sits on one phase and uses that phase's share. Good design spreads the single phase loads across the three so that no phase runs out while the others idle.
The cost and complexity trade off
A three phase stack carries more gear than a single phase system, and the extra comes in a few places:
- Three inverters instead of one, each with its own cabling and protection.
- A three phase switchboard, with the loads balanced across it.
- Normally a three phase generator, so each phase's inverter charger has its own input from it.
- More careful commissioning. Phase rotation, firmware, symmetrical cabling and configuration all have to be right, and Victron's automatic alarms in VRM include AC phase rotation for exactly that reason.
- Lower surge per phase than one big unit. Three 5 kVA units in three phase can each only start a motor on their own phase, whereas one 15 kVA unit offers its whole surge to one single phase load.
None of that makes three phase a poor choice. It makes it the right choice for properties that run three phase machines, and the wrong one for a house that does not.
How we decide
The starting point is a list of every machine on the property, its motor plate and how it is used. If every big load is single phase, or can be, the system stays single phase. If there are three phase machines that cannot change, or the total load would need several large single phase inverters, we design a three phase stack and balance the single phase loads across it. The sizing tool gives the energy side, and our cost page explains what moves the price.

Questions
Can an off grid system run three phase?
Yes. Victron inverter chargers can be configured in sets of three, one per phase, working as one system from a single battery bank, and sets can be paralleled for more power.
Can I add a third phase to my existing single phase off grid system?
Sometimes. All units in a three phase Victron system must be the same type and firmware, so the existing inverter may become one of the three if its model is still suitable. The switchboard and generator usually need changes too.
Is three phase more efficient off grid?
Not for ordinary household loads. Its advantage is for three phase motors, which start and run smoothly on it. For lights, power points and appliances, single phase does the same job with less equipment.
Does each phase need its own battery?
No. Victron's manual requires every unit and every battery to share one DC bus. Separate battery banks per phase will not work in a Victron three phase system.
