Yapeen is about nine kilometres south of Castlemaine and was part of the Strathloddon pastoral run before gold was found in 1852 at Pennyweight Flat. The name, from a local word meaning green hill or valley, was given in 1861. Chinese miners were prominent, and some later started market gardens.
