Tarilta began as Kangaroo Flat after gold was found near the junction of Kangaroo Creek and the Loddon River in 1853, and it was surveyed and named Tarilta in 1864. By 1865 it had three quartz crushing mills and two hotels. The name is thought to come from a Djadjawurrung word for kangaroo, and the locality spans Hepburn and Mount Alexander shires.
