Chewton grew out of the gold found at Barkers Creek in 1851, which brought more than 30,000 diggers to the area within three months. When the alluvial gold ran out, Welsh and Cornish miners moved onto the underground reefs, and the Red Hill Hotel from 1854 and the Town Hall from 1858 still stand. The Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park surrounds much of the area.
It is slowly becoming a suburb of Castlemaine while holding on to its own identity, which means a mix of old miners' cottages and newer houses under big trees. Miners' cottages can have small roofs, low ceilings and old switchboards, so the sequence of work matters as much as the equipment.
