It began as a sheep run in 1845, then grew with mining for iron ore, lignite, clay and gold, and the railway arrived in 1862. The Lal Lal Falls and the Lal Lal Reservoir on the Moorabool River are close by, and the old iron smelting works is on the Victorian Heritage Register.
It is farm country, with houses scattered around the old mining workings. Ground mounts on disturbed ground need caution, and a shed or house roof that is clear of trees is usually the better starting point.
